The New Etcher

Press release: Balena Etcher

Publisher: Etcher

Etcher is an open-source bootable USB creator software. It currently has two different versions, one that runs on your computer and another laptop that you can carry on a USB (portable) to use on any other computer. The primary function of Etcher is to create bootable USBs. With them, you can do several things, such as creating installation media for other operating systems through their ISO images. You can also mount the operating system on the USB to work with it on any computer that does not have it, and even record data with which to update the firmware or BIOS of a computer from DOS. Etcher focuses mainly on ease of use, which means that it sacrifices some options that you can find in other tools, such as downloading the ISO images from the Internet instead of needing to have them on your computer. But in return, you have a very simple application to use even for those without technical knowledge. Besides, it is an extremely reliable application that only occupies 110 MB of storage, which means that you can use it on virtually any computer. The one requirement is that it must necessarily be used on a Windows computer, with a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7 or later. Finally, Etcher uses a GNU General Public License (GPL) version 3 or later. This means that your code is free, and anyone can access it to share or modify the application, as long as the resulting tool also applies for the GPLv3 license. The source code of the application can be found on Github.
